The Full Story
My Path to Be An Instructional Designer
I am currently a third-year EDD student with an enthusiasm for developing a career as a professional instructional designer.
However, this was not always the path I envisioned for myself.
My undergraduate and master's studies, as well as the beginning of my professional experience, focused on language education, particularly bilingual education.
Unexpectedly, my previous position as an international education program manager opened the gateway to the world of instructional design. I became fascinated by the joy and sense of accomplishment that came from implementing instructional programs designed by my team.
As a result, I am eager to receive systematic training in instructional design and advance along my career path as an instructional designer.
While most of my previous academic and professional experiences revolved around designing and implementing in-person instruction, I am now planning to pursue a career as an e-learning instructional designer in the future.
Throughout the pandemic, I witnessed educators grappling with remote learning, struggling to provide students with proper instruction and necessary interventions based on their assessment results. Students sometimes misunderstood teachers' instructions due to the structure of the online learning platforms. Teachers became frustrated with the implementation of online classes and the challenge of maintaining clear instructions and assessment requirements.
Online learning platforms, which used to bear only a small portion of the responsibility for effective instruction, are now functioning as the primary or sole means of teacher-student communication. This unique transition has heightened my awareness of e-learning design as a rapidly emerging area of concern. I am eager to further develop my philosophy and approach to designing online learning platforms and products, in order to support educators and learners throughout this transitional process.
